Top 3

May 20th 2008 01:40
The top three sides in the AFL at the moment are a formidable sight.

First there is the notorious Cats, who display the class and skill that we have all come to expect. They are completely dominant throughout the ground, and thrive on the abilities of Stevie Johnson and Gary Ablett.

The Hawks are finally contenders for the flag again, and are keen to relive their success of the 80s. Buddy Franklin is bringing a Carey-like dominance to the game, with his strength, speed and accuracy proving unstoppable already.

The Dogs are a surprising and yet strong force, attacking each game with the ferocity of players with a point to prove. They have endured tough times and have returned with a mix of mature and young players all with the desire to win a flag this year.

All three sides have dominated the league so far this year. The train they are on seems unstoppable, until at least, these teams meet. For someone has to drop a game soon, but until then we can only watch these gladiators fight it out.

HALL OF FAME MATCH

May 15th 2008 03:45
The Hall of Fame match is a fantastic idea for showcasing the high level of talent currently dominating the AFL. It was great to watch Jonathan Brown play for Victoria, greats like Matthew Richardson playing for the Dream Team.

An exhibition match like this should be played yearly, as it is a great honour for those involved and invokes unitiy amongst the fans. The game was ultimately regarded as a 'friendly', and although it did spark up in the stands and for a moment on the field, it did embrace the spirit of the AFL.

This match highlighted the dominance of full forwards in the modern game, as the match seemed to lack a defensive touch. It was like ground work, as the ball was sent up and down the field in what resulted in a shoot out.

I enjoyed seeing the coaches also unite, as they embarked on new game plans and put aside their bias in order to put on a fantastic display, and a fitting tribute to the Hall of Fame.

I can only hope that next year some Essendon players are chosen!

Essendon

May 15th 2008 03:32
I barrack for the Essendon Bombers and I have to say, this year was always going to be one to forget. Our list never had the depth that it could have had, and we were left with a mix of youngsters combined with a few older and slower players which has created a gap in talent for the team.

Early days proved exciting, with the exhilerating run of Davey up forward, and the mouth watering talent of Paddy Ryder, and yet with James Hird not there to fill in the gaps, Essendon is yet to have a player stand up to the pressure.

The injury list is the worst in the AFL at the moment, and yet there are some shining lights to get us Bomber fans through this dark time.

Jobe Watson's ability to find the ball and execute bullet hand balls is remarkable. The pace of Leroy Jetta is promising, along with Dempsey and Reimers.

It is time to recruit heavily to stabilise the backline, and to do this some players must be sacrificed. Matthew Knights announced this week that Jason Johnson and Damien Peverill will have 'limited opportunities' in the senior team, and whilst this is dissappointing for all fans, maybe this is the way to inject the Bombers with some youth and revist the glory years.

The future looks good, just ignore the present.

GREATEST FULL BACK

May 15th 2008 03:21

Glenn Archer implied in today's Herald Sun that Matthew Scarlett of Geelong is a better full back than the great Stephen Silvagni. This proved to be an interesting thought, as it reminded me of how much AFL has changed in the last decade, and whether or not the time that the players played in affected how great they would become.
